HOW GOD BROUGHT THE SALESIANS TO THE KONKAN REGION
An article by Fr. Elias Diaz

It is said that Parasurama stood on the top of the Sahyadri Ghat and saw that it was beautiful. He then shot an arrow from the top into the sea, which then receded and gave rise to the fertile Konkan region. Long coastlines between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea, decorated with lovely mountains and valleys, with tiny hamlets and winding rivers is the dwelling place of God fearing, peace-loving and hospitable people of this region.

The Salesians came to Bombay on 18 th May 1928 under the leadership of Fr. Joseph Hauber and took possession of the Catholic Educational Institute of the Immaculate Conception at Tardeo, which was offered to them by the Bombay Catholic Welfare Organization (An association of Goans).  Goa always loved the Salesians of Don Bosco, and the first Salesian missionaries reciprocated this love with their sincere affection, hard work and love for the poor. God in His Divine Providence chose Fr. Vincent Scuderi, a missionary who was at the Civilian Internment Camp at Purandarh to lead the way. Fr. Joseph Carreno worked hard to obtain the necessary permission from the Indian and the Portuguese governments. He also found a place where Fr. Scuderi could stay in the building that belonged to the Assitencia aos Indigentes e Infancia Desvalida.
It was on the night of 4 th April 1946 that Fr. Scuderi arrived in Goa. Prophetically, he spent his first night in the house that would later become the first house of the Salesians in Goa. He called it Oratorio Salesiano Don Bosco. The next day, he celebrated his 44th birthday on the soil of Goa.

Divine Providence always came to help in the projects of Don Bosco. After the arrival of Fr. Scuderi in Goa, an Italian prisoner of war, Giovanni Bellassai, a Sicilian fugitive in Goa from the camp of Bhopal, came to know about Fr. Scuderi and he offered his services without any pay. He was a carpenter by profession and thus the first carpentry shop began in Goa. Meanwhile Fr. Scuderi was working hard to find a plot of land to establish the Salesian presence in Goa. Providence always pointed to the land in which he had been residing since he set foot in Goa. In spite of the many difficulties, on 5th August 1948, the deed was signed with Messrs. Camotoa, the landowners and hardware merchants. The land, 44,000 square meters was bought at Rs. 10/- per square meter. The Portuguese Government helped with some money and the Patriarch of Goa donated a sum of more than Rs. 30,000, collected during the festivities for the Silver Jubilee of his episcopate. The Commission in charge wanted to erect a monument in his honour, which he objected to. Instead he gave the money to the Salesians to build a technical school in Goa. Fr. Carreno eventually built the school in 1955. The rest of the debts were cleared in many installments.

In 1948, Msgr. B. Martins, one of the priest-brothers of an eminent family of Martins of Taleigao, donated a 20-acre plot at Odxel to Msgr. Scuderi. It was to be used for pastoral purposes, mainly for the Kunbis who lived along the banks of the Zuari. Today, besides the Mass center for the local people, there is a beautiful “Light House” perched on a hillock commanding this fertile coastal region - the Headquarters of the new Konkan delegation.

May God bless this new delegation and may all work for the success of this project.
