OF THE DELEGATION - 7 t h October 1999
|
On 7 th October, the feast of Our Lady
of the Rosary, the Konkan Delegation was inaugurated with the installation
of the delegate Fr. Romulo Noronha sdb. The inaugural mass was at the shrine
of Our Lady of Fatima, Panjim. The Mass was in Konkani, in keeping with
the occasion, including the homily and the oath of the delegate. Rev. Fr.
Tony D’Souza, the Provincial was the main celebrant at the mass and many
rectors and other priests who were present concelebrated at the Mass. Before
the Mass, Fr. Provincial gave a short introduction, explaining to the people
the meaning of a delegation. Before the final blessing, the delegate Fr.
Romulo, was asked to say something about the days when he was a student
and a boarder at Panjim. There were several past pupils in the crowd who
were happy and even moved, recollecting the good old days spent in the
boarding and the sacrifices of the then superiors, especially Fr. Carreno.
The reception and dinner was at the delegate
headquarters at Odxel, to which all the Salesians, the Salesian sisters,
representatives of the past pupils and cooperators and the close relatives
of Fr. Romulo who were present, were invited. The Archbishop of Goa, though
invited for the dinner, could not make it as he had another inauguration
at Margao. The two councillors: Fr. Michael Mascarenhas and Fr. Tomas Fernandes
whose names were announced during the Mass, were also felicitated. Fr Michael
raised the toast and Fr. Tomas blessed the table. Fr. Wilfred Fernandes
of Sutgatti was the compere at the function. |

IN GOA

Childline, the organisation that helps
children in distress, was officially launched in Goa on 9th June 2000 with
the Chief Minister Mr. Francisco Sardinha dialing 1098 and quipping “The
CM is in distress”.
The launch, held at the Don Bosco’s boys
hostel, saw Central and State dignitaries exchanging niceties not
just with people from various NGOs but also with around fifty school kids
who have been termed “Childline Bal Sena”, with a mission of making Childline
known to all.
“Through such organisations, the Central
government is trying to encourage people to look after children who will
be pillars of society in the future,” stated Mr. Sardinha and he
assured that “any government department would be at the beck and call of
Childline whenever such a need arises.”
“It is the duty of every person to come
forward and help Childline. I only hope there won’t be too many cases
to look after”, stated the CM.
Jeroo Billimoria, the brain behind the
creation of Childline, said: “Childline was on a trial run for the last
two months in Goa and received 35 distress calls of which several were
serious cases. Claiming that sexual abuse and family violence were
the common phenomena in Goa, Billimoria added that Childline had already
rehabilitated a girl who was sexually abused by her mother’s boyfriend
and had rescued several abandoned babies.
Incidentally, a few minutes before the
red ribbon on the telephone was cut, a distress call came through.
A Miramar STD booth owner, Mr. Joe Lobo, dialed 1098 to report that a two-month-old
baby had been abandoned at Miramar. Reacting immediately to the call,
a Childline member rushed to the spot. The baby was taken to the
Missionaries of Charity, Panjim and placed under their care.
Also speaking on the occasion was Deputy
Secretary, Ministry of Social Welfare and Empowerment, Dev Verman, who
gave credit for Childine’s success to “the people who dialled 1098 and
highlighted an abused child or a child in distress”, and the Salesian Provincial
of Mumbai, Fr. Tony D’Souza, who promised that help to the organisation
would be total. |

"Eucharistreat
" -THE RETRE AT TUEM
The first annual retreat for the confreres
was held in Tuem - Mount Don Bosco, much to the likes of 'Tabor' or 'Sinai'.
It was well attended for the first time by 40 confreres. Fr. Vincent Vaz
did a commendable task in
exploring the depths and various aspects
of the Eucharist. In his simplicity and rich experience, Fr. Vincent shared
about the aspect of 'Love', which is the real Eucharist of life.
Singing the long forgotten, yet rich Latin and English Eucharistic hymns,
one could really feel the true sentiments of the Eucharist, which should
reflect in our own lives and communities. Thank you Fr. Vincent. We hope
and pray that the sacrifice of love we offer at the altar, may pervade
even our daily lives.
One can't ignore the innumerable sacrifices
of the Tuem community, with Fr. Leandro and his team, to accommodate everyone
in a truly "Goanna" Hospitality. Every detail of accommodation, food and
other requirements, were so well looked after of.

AGRO-ED COMPLEX, SULCORNA
Who says only cows,
coconuts, bananas, feni, urak and the like are available in the
farm? Probably most remember Sulcorna only at "8.00 PM". Besides
these accessories most of our energies are utilized in building the lives
of the 100 odd boarders that adorn the campus. The Marian month was held
in its traditional grandeur from 16th July to 13th August culminating with
the Marian Nite. In sports, the U-17 football team emerged winners at the
taluka level in the Subroto Mukherjee tournament.
Of-late, DB Sulcorna
has been in the news, in connection with the famous long standing Dilkush
Case. It was really comforting to receive the court verdict on this issue.
On 10 August 2000, in the "Dilkush Desai Case", the Quepem Court
discharged the "Receiver" and returned to us the "Receiver's plot".
We had been fighting this case for 22 years (from 1978). Thanks
to effort of so many Salesians who have struggled through this ordeal.

DON
BOSCO PANJIM
After a month-long preparation, by way
of competitions, prayer Services, Sermonettes, etc., the aspirants culminated
their love for Mary through the usual Marian Nite on the 14th of August.
However, it was not as usual, with about 35 other likely candidates from
the school, staying in and around Panjim, joining in the solemnity of the
occasion. The presence of the delegate and every Salesian confrere of the
community in the various games kept alive the family spirit.
The traditional football match between
the Past-pupils and Salesians once again witnessed the typical family attitude
that exists in the Salesian family. The match was held on the 20th of August,
and almost every
community in the Goa region was represented
in the Salesian team. The young and the old Past-pupils did try hard to
resist the formidable one-sided attack. Needless to say, the Salesians
won with a clear margin 6-1.
The match was followed by a chai-snack
for all the past-pupils and a family meal for the Salesians.

MOUNT
DON BOSCO, TUEM
Mount Don Bosco, at Tuem Goa, is an idyllic
set place, where boarding, school and parish combined with nature all around,
make this place a paradise on earth. The Rector, Fr. Leandro Gracias, who
incidentally is
also the Principal is ably assisted by
Fr. Francis Silveira the Administrator, Fr. Alexinho Rodrigues (Parish
Priest), Dn. Anand Noronha and Cl. Clifford Lasrado. The boarding has 104
boys, most coming from
problem families or financially poor homes,
but the boys are rich at heart. Their generosity, sense of work and
cordiality equals the Lonavla of old.
The boarding activities match that of
any aspirantate anywhere. The co-ed school has 214 pupils, from the 5th
to the 10th. The vastly spread out parish, caters to about 200 families.
What can we say about the nature around our place. We rise every morning
to the melodious sounds of peacocks and a host of other birds, shrouded
at times in a curtain of mist and clouds giving us the feeling of being
on Mount Sinai. One end of our place overlooks the river and the other
reaches the sky, from where we get a beautiful view of the vast expanse
of God's wonderful land.
Regarding activities let it not be said
that the small number of students at school hamper talents and growth.
This year our under-17 football team, were the taluka level champions,
so was the under -14 last year.
Competitions, games and programmes, apart
from the regular school studies, help keep the minds of the students active.
The boarding just completed a very active and prayerful Marian month. Our
Delegate Fr. Romulo took time out to visit us for our Marian Nite Programmme.
Other activities like competitions, games, hikes, night walks, swimming,
fishing, films, etc., keep the boarders active physically and mentally
and helps develop up their talents. One of the now regular features
of the house of Tuem is the annual retreat, which is hosted by our house.
This year we had 39 retreatants for the retreat preached by Fr. Vincent
Vaz. The theme running through his talks were based on the Eucharist.
Well, what else can be said about our
house? They say seeing is believing, so if you want to know more about
our house you are welcome to experience our place, cordiality family spirit
and hospitality.

CRAFTS INSTITUTE, LOUTOLIM
With the slow trickling in of school dropouts
from the various schools in various parts of Goa, Don Bosco Crafts marched
ahead in full steam. With just 30 young work hands in its different trades
of electricity, welding
and carpentry, the massive tasks at hand
are never to easy. Yet, what these amateurs could achieve can easily deceive
your eyes. The complete metal and electric work of the new Benaulim construction
was finished in July, and loads of carpentry jobs with student desks for
DB Panjim, other orders of tables and stands etc., were completed with
great efficiency. Besides tough manual labour, there is a lot of
religious and co-curricular development that also takes place. On the 26th
of August Sr. Rose (Ursulines) conducted a whole day Orientation Programme.
The boys also participated in a 5-a-side tournament at Raia.
